The Story of Merapi

The Story of Merapi
BPPTKG: Gunung Merapi luncurkan empat guguran lava pijar pada ...

Hi, Climber Friend!
Mount Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia, located right in the middle of the island of Java.
According to legend, Mount Merapi is told as a stake that maintains the balance of the island of Java so
as not to tilt. The mountain which has an altitude reaching 2,930 meters above sea level is administratively
located between Central Java and Yogyakarta.

The last major eruption experienced by Mount Merapi occurred in 2010 and killed the figure of a very
famous caretaker at the time, Mr. Marijan. Not only that, some villages on the slopes of Mount Merapi
are also scorched by hot clouds, incandescent lava, sand and gravel. Now the area is a destination for
volcano tours in Yogyakarta.

Although it holds the title as the most active mountain in Indonesia, Mount Merapi has never lost its
charisma among climbers. Every weekend or long holiday, Mount Merapi is always crowded with
climbers who want to conquer the summit. Behind its majesty and valor, Mount Merapi holds various
mystical stories that cannot be understood by common sense.

One of the most famous stories is the existence of Bubrah Market which is believed to be the Devil's
Market, a nest for the supernatural nation. According to the story circulating, Bubrah Market is always
crowded with buying and selling activities in the afternoon until late morning. Not infrequently also heard
the sound of gamelan wasps that are quite loud in the Bubrah Market.

Bubrah Market Location is a place that is often used by climbers to set up tents to take shelter and take
a break from the cold winds of Mount Merapi. The contour of the land which is not too steep and roomy,
is quite easy for climbers to set up tents.

Many testimonies were revealed by climbers who experienced unreasonable events at Bubrah Market.
One is the story of a climber who lost consciousness after claiming to buy a banana from a trader near
his tent at midnight. It is very unlikely there are traders who sell in the climbing area right at the foot of
Mount Merapi, especially in the middle of the night.

Regarding gamelan sura, there are those who believe that the sound comes from gamelan music played
by soft men. There are also those who believe the sound comes from the sound of the wind that blows
very hard in the Bubrah Market. Because, Bubrah Market has been outside the vegetation limit so that
not even a single tree can drive out strong winds.

The eruption of Mount Merapi is believed by local people to have something to do with the palace of
South Sulawesi which may be invisible. The palace is located along the southern coast of Parangtritis
which is controlled by the Queen of the South Beach, Nyi Roro Kidul. When Mount Merapi erupts,
people believe that there is a crowd or a party at the "Keraton Kidul". Therefore, climbers are prohibited
from climbing at these times. It is said that if it violates the cultural customs of the local community, the
consequences will be fatal.

Point of view:
Communities around Mount Merapi and Yogyakarta are thick with customs and culture. For that, we as
ordinary people must be able to accept that trust and respect it. Natural law always applies, our attitude
must also be maintained properly so as not to be fatal.

Closing Statement:
This reading is truly extraordinary. Great for all ages. Because it contains certain regional cultural
customs that we must know so that we can be saved and protected by the almighty God and make it a
learning.
